Color Outside the Lines finds GLAD reclaiming its long tradition as both an instrumental and vocal band. For close observers of the group, the direction of this recording will come as no surprise. "It's a matter of being true to what we are," says Ed Nalle. "The guys in GLAD have always seen themselves as players and singers. While the a cappella material has expanded our audience and ministry in a great way, we don't want to be one dimensional. We feel like it's important to continue to do what comes naturally, that is, to utilize the gifts God has given us -- instrumental and vocal." For the first time in some years GLAD has collaborated with new producers. Mark Baldwin, a Nashville session guitarist, artist (Brentwood Jazz Quartet), and GLAD alumnus from the early '80's, seemed the perfect candidate to draw the best out of the band in the studio. For his outstanding programming abilities and pop sensibility, the group elected to work with long-time friend and producer, Joe Hogue (Larnelle Harris, DC Talk, Billy and Sarah Gaines ). The result: a collection of the most artful, accessible tunes recorded by the band in a decade.
Through all the recent changes the band's sense of purpose behind all their work in the studio and on the road remains clear. "The music we do is entertaining, but our ministry's confrontational," says Ed Nalle. "We feel called to explain to people who the Jesus is that we're singing about, and that His ministry among us demands a response. We tell people about sin, about the consequences of sin, and that Jesus came so that we could avoid those consequences and have a joyful, abundant life. We entertain, and we challenge, and that's what we're going to continue to do."
Review
"Glad members... have crafted an album that is a musical celebration, buoyed by strong vocals, soaring harmonies, and uplifting lyrics. The group infuses these lively pop songs with a sense of joy that permeates both the uptempo numbers and the slower pieces." -- Billboard, May 13, '95
From the Label
"The instrumental work here is more polished than ever, the harmonies are drum-tight, and Ed Nalle once again proves himself a more-than-capable lead vocalist. Lyrically, Glad's songs are, once again, thoughtfully conceived and intelligently written."
About the Artist
Color Outside the Lines finds Glad exploring expansive new musical terrain. With fourteen hit recordings spanning 17-years, Glad has played a pivotal role in the shaping of contemporary Christian music as we know it today. After thousands of concerts and with over 1.2 million albums sold, the five members of Glad are clearly continuing to challenge themselves to stretch beyond the predictable with Color Outside the Lines.
Although Glad was formed as a progressive rock band in 1978, its music changed during the 80's to more of a pop/jazz sound with an occasional a cappella selection. During this period, the group released the hugely successful The Acapella Project (1988). The recording quickly became a best seller, with more than 300,000 copies sold. Glad followed The Acapella Project with three additional a cappella recordings, two of which remain on the top 100 Christian albums sales chart for 1994 (CCM Update).
As accomplished musicians and one of popular music's premier vocal ensembles, Glad set out to capture on Color Outside the Lines the intricate harmonies it became known for, along with the polished band sound it pioneered. In order to accomplish this goal, Glad introduced a series of new elements for its first band album in more than two years.
Determined to move beyond its own paradigm, Glad signed with a new record label, Light Records, a division of Platinum Entertainment. Breaking from its tradition of producing its own albums "in house", Glad decided to incorporate the talents of one of Nashville's premier session guitarists, Mark Baldwin, who produced three songs, and veteran producer Joe Hogue (DC Talk, Larnelle Harris, Billy and Sarah Gaines), who produced three songs. Lead vocalist and Glad founder, Ed Nalle, produced the remaining four songs.
"Joe Hogue added a very modern, hip touch to the songs he produced," says Ed, "and Mark did a great job of stretching the band instrumentally into new places. All their efforts fit very well with the kind of intricate vocal arrangements that we love to do, and that people have come to expect from us". Color Outside the Lines has a very contemporary band sound, and it's one of the bolder musical statements we've made," adds drummer John Gates, whose background prior to Glad includes extensive session work with a number of R&B greats, including Gladys Knight & the Pips.
In addition to using outside producers, Glad recruited top engineer Rick Fritz. Fritz, who has engineered for well-known artists Restless Heart, Peter Cetera, The Jordanaires, David Bowie, Bruce Hornsby, etc., engineered the final mixes for Color Outside the Lines at River North Studios in Chicago.
