Cruising America's Waterways boards the Mississippi Queen, a classic paddlewheeler, for a seven-day cruise on the Mississippi River. From the steam engine to the steam-powered calliope, this vessel recalls the Victorian Era's luxury travel by boat. Along the way we visit the National Civil Rights Museum; Elvis' Graceland (Memphis); the National Military Park; the Army Corps. of Engineers (Vicksburg); antebellus homes; and a working cotton plantation (Natchez). There's the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola; the beautiful gardens of Rosedown (St. Francisville); Louisiana's Art Deco state capital; Cajun cooking; a swamp tour (Baton Rouge); and stops at Oak Alley and Laura Plantations (Vacherie). While in New Orleans we visit the port facilities, Lake Pontchartrain, and the Cabildo. Of course, no trip to New Orleans is complete without sampling the food and music of the famed French quarter.
From the Contributor
The Mississippi River is one of America's great rivers and a fitting subject for our award-winning waterway series. The stretch of the Mississippi we visit is often filled with commercial vessels including long tows of barges which are fascinating to see. Travel aboard the Mississippi Queen is truly a step back in time, preparing us well for the many historic plantations found in communities along the river. The south's famed hospitality is in clear evidence, whether dining in a "round-table" restaurant or visiting a working cotton plantation.
