On August 10, 1628, the Vasa, a warship that symbolized the might of the Swedish navy, raised anchor in the harbour of Skeppsgärden, Stockholm, and embarked on her maiden voyage. Warship Vasa, a documentary film by Anders Wahlgren, Vasamuseet, Stockholm,. Sweden, 1996. The VASA sank in 1628. On August 10, 1628, the Vasa, a warship that symbolized the might of the Swedish navy, raised anchor in the harbour of Skeppsgärden, Stockholm, and embarked on her maiden voyage. Built to withstand the enemy, the powerful ship was 226 feet long, equipped with 64 cannons and weighed 1,200 tons. But her first voyage was cut tragically short: as she slowly made her way toward the harbour mouth, the Vasa was broadsided by a gust of wind. Water rushed in through the open portholes and the ship sank, killing 50 crewmembers. The Vasa was to remain mired 100 feet below the surface of Stockholm's harbour for over 330 years-until the day in 1956 when archaeologist and engineer Anders Franzén finally located the wreck after long and patient research. Divers began clearing debris from the upper decks. The Herculean task of raising the ship took place on April 24, 1961, after years of preparation. A treasure trove was brought to the surface. Archeologists entered an untouched 17th century environment. The time machine that was the salvaged ship could tell of life on board and on land. Conservation work on the 69 meter-lon ship took 17 years. Today, the Vasa has been restored. This film follows the work – an adventure in the form of the world’s biggest jigsaw puzzle, with all of 13,500 pieces, ISBN13:B003OE7SM2 ISBN10:B003OE7SM2 Material Type:dvd
